VDOT is Leading the Way in Using Technology to Improve Safety and Mobility
Connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies and solutions are expected to bring transformative change to the safety and efficiency of surface transportation. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) expects that CAV deployments will:
- Impact safety and mobility for drivers and the traveling public
- Create opportunities for economic development, including through a growing workforce dedicated to CAVs, and through more efficient exchange of goods across roadways
- Increase freight throughput and transportation of goods
VDOT’s CAV Program guides the Department in the deployment and sustainment of related technologies and initiatives.
VDOT strives to capitalize on the safety and operational benefits of CAV technologies to meet the Program’s goals and objectives. The Program’s vision is to prepare Virginia’s roadways for the deployment of connected and automated vehicles in a manner that leverages the safety, accessibility, economic, and operational benefits of CAVs.
To achieve this vision, VDOT is leveraging key resources unique to Virginia, including:
- A vast network of urban and rural roadways, most of which VDOT owns and operates
- Trusted world-class research and testing capabilities
- Mature, robust, and supported networking and cloud-based data services
- A flexible regulatory environment for innovative transportation solutions
VDOT pursues CAV strategies that have the potential to:
- Reduce the frequency and severity of incidents
- Reduce congestion
- Improve situational awareness of our roadway network
- Ultimately reduce traffic management and control infrastructure
CAV Program Plan
The 2020 VDOT CAV Program Plan provides a strategic roadmap to guide VDOT in preparing for a future with CAVs.
