VDOT COMPLETES SINKHOLE WORK ON INTERSTATE 64 IN ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY– ALL LANES REOPENED

STAUNTON – All sinkhole repairs have been completed on Interstate 64 westbound at mile marker 53.8.  This location is just past the Maury River bridges near Lexington in Rockbridge County. All I-64 lanes have reopened.

I-64 westbound lanes were closed between Interstate 81 and exit 50.

On August 16, 2023 a sinkhole was discovered in the right lane during routine maintenance work the morning. The right lane was immediately closed with crews monitoring the site. The hole excavation work was in the right lane, but all westbound lanes were closed for several hours to allow repairs to begin.

Repairs were completed about 1:30 p.m. on August 17.  The sinkhole was approximately 20 feet deep.  The opening was nine feet wide and 11 feet long.

Sinkhole repairs include excavating the hole to determine its size and the stability of the surrounding ground before back-filling it and repairing the surrounding roadway
