NORTHBOUND I-81 REOPENS AT HARRISONBURG
STAUNTON – (1 p.m.) Both northbound lanes of Interstate 81 have reopened at Harrisonburg following a tractor trailer crash that damaged a bridge Monday morning, March 23. The truck hit the underside of the westbound Route 33 overpass at exit 247 (Harrisonburg/Elkton), but inspectors from the Virginia Department of Transportation have determined that the bridge is safe for traffic.
The northbound I-81 detour has been lifted. The left two lanes of the westbound Route 33 bridge are open, but the acceleration lane from northbound I-81 is closed. Motorists should use extra caution in this area.
Repairs to the Route 33 overpass are scheduled for Monday night. During repairs, the northbound I-81 right lane will be closed. The northbound I-81 off-ramp to westbound Route 33 and the eastbound on-ramp to northbound I-81 will also be closed.
