VDOT News - Staunton

STAUNTON –  (10:30 p.m.)  Heavy snow is predicted for the Shenandoah Valley region on Saturday night into Sunday morning. Travel in the area is not advised. 

The Virginia Department of Transportation continues to plow and treat roads. The VDOT Staunton District has deployed approximately 400 pieces of equipment for snow removal operations for this storm. 

Plowing operations continue 24-hours-a-day with crews working 12-hour shifts. Roads were pre-treated with a salt brine on Thursday and Friday. The brine helps prevent snow and ice bonding to the road surface.

Residents of the area are asked to park in driveways and off roads so plows can plow the entire road width.

Here are the road conditions as of 10:30 p.m. in the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District:

Interstate 64 – Moderate conditions in Alleghany and Rockbridge counties. Minor conditions in Augusta County.

Interstate 66 – Moderate conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Rockbridge and Shenandoah counties.  Minor conditions are in Augusta, Rockingham and Frederick counties.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Highland, Bath, Alleghany and Rockbridge counties. Moderate to minor conditions in Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Minor conditions in August and Page counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.

Road condition definitions:

Severe – drifting or partially blocked road. 

Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway. 

Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
