SOUTH CHESTERFIELD —The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Richmond District is preparing to keep roadways and motorists safe as the potential for flash flooding, heavy rain, high winds and debris associated with severe storms remains high for the region.

In preparation for the storms, VDOT and maintenance contractors are:

• inspecting and clearing culverts, ditches and inlets to prevent water from collecting on roadways during heavy rain
• removing debris from roads and shoulders that could block drains
• preparing chainsaws and equipping vehicles with necessary equipment (ropes, flashlights, flares, extra chains for chainsaws, batteries)

Drivers should be prepared for possible downed trees and power lines, as well as high water that might make travel difficult following the storms. Keep the following in mind as the storm approaches:

• If a traffic signal is out, drivers are advised to treat the intersection as a four way stop.
• Never drive through high water. Turn around, don’t drown.
