Route 50 and Waples Mill Road Intersection Improvements Open in Fairfax
Additional left-turn lane and new bicyclist/pedestrian crossing open ahead of schedule
FAIRFAX – Improvements aimed at enhancing safety, traffic flow and bicyclist/pedestrian accessibility and mobility are open nearly two months ahead of schedule at the intersection of Route 50 and Waples Mill Road (Route 665), according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Drivers have a new additional left-turn lane from westbound Route 50 to southbound Waples Mill Road.
Bicyclists and pedestrians have a new crossing and refuge island along the western side of the intersection across Route 50, providing additional connections to the nearby 66 Parallel Trail access coming to Waples Mill Road later this summer.
At the intersection, Route 50 averages 48,000 vehicles a day and Waples Mill Road averages about 25,000.
Construction on the Route 50 and Waples Mill Intersection Improvements project began in October and is now substantially complete, with minor work occurring in the coming weeks until final completion with minimal impacts.
The $2.9 million project is financed with local funding and by part of the concession fee provided under the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project Comprehensive Agreement.
Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.
