VDOT News - Northern Virginia

FAIRFAX – Overnight lane closures and stoppages are planned on I-66 West approaching Gallows Road Friday and Saturday, September 16 and 17, and Monday through Wednesday, September 19 to 21, for continued installation of bridge beams for the new Gallows Road South Bridge over I-66. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. 

Additionally, Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction during the overnight hours September 16-17, and September 19-21. The southbound lanes of Gallows Road will be closed with two-way traffic running on the northbound side.  

Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area and are encouraged to use alternate routes.

Friday, September 16, and Saturday, September 17
Monday, September 19, through Wednesday, September 21
I-66 West from I-495 to Gallows Road

• Three lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
• Drivers should expect periodic stoppages during the overnight hours.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West

• One lane on the ramp will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from 495 Express Lanes South to I-66 West

• The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
• Overhead message boards will direct drivers to alternate routes.
• The ramp will reopen by 5 a.m.

Gallows Road over I-66

• Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Southbound Gallows Road will be closed with two-way traffic running on the northbound side during this period.
• All lanes will reopen by 6 a.m.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

Gallows Road over I-66 is being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridge is being lengthened, widened, raised, and shifted to the east to accommodate the new Express Lanes and provide room for future improvements along Gallows Road.
