NOW OPEN: ROUTE 17 SOUTHBOUND BRIDGE OVER DRAGON RUN
Project improved the condition of a structurally deficient bridge through Virginia’s State of Good Repair program

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Construction was completed today on a bridge rehabilitation project on Route 17 southbound over Dragon Run at the Middlesex and Gloucester county line.

The $4.1 million project improved the existing bridge by installing a slightly wider bridge deck and new steel beams. It also improved the bridge approaches on Route 17 southbound.

The 24-hour single lane closure on Route 17 southbound has been lifted. Two southbound travel lanes are now open on the bridge. The single lane closure allowed Route 17 to remain open while construction was accomplished in phases. Construction began in May 2020.

Virginia’s State of Good Repair program funded this project. The program dedicates state maintenance funds to restoring deficient bridges and pavements. The Route 17 southbound bridge over Dragon Run bridge was built in 1957.

The project contractor was J. Sanders Construction Co., of West Point.

Around 11,000 vehicles a day travel Route 17, northbound and southbound, in the vicinity of the Dragon Run bridge.
