PUBLIC HEARING FOR RT. 701 BRIDGE IN LOUISA COUNTY, AUG. 1
VDOT will present plans to rehabilitate the bridge on Belle Meade Road over Little River

CULPEPER — Tuesday, Aug. 1, the public will have a chance to see construction plans to rehabilitate a bridge on Route 701 (Belle Meade Road) near Bumpass. The hearing will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Louisa County Library, located at 881 Davis highway in Mineral.

Contractors with the Virginia Department of Transportation will replace the existing superstructure, which is posted with a 12-ton weight limit, with concrete slabs and an asphalt riding surface.

The current structure was built in 1985 and is considered substandard. It currently carries about 700 cars a day and serves residential areas, local businesses and industries. If not rehabilitated, the existing bridge will continue to deteriorate and will eventually have to be closed to traffic. The estimated cost stands at $4.74 million.

During construction, Route 701 will be reduced to one lane controlled by a temporary traffic signal at each end of the bridge. Once work is complete, the bridge will open to all legal-weight vehicles.

Culpeper District updates are on the district’s Facebook page and the district’s Twitter account, @VaDOTCulp.
